Because behind every single parent working toward their degree, every child watching their parent refuse to quit, and every family breaking free from the cycle of poverty, there is a community of hearts beating in unison to make it possible.
It takes heart to write a check when the return on your investment won’t show up in a few months, but in a generation. It takes heart to volunteer your time for a family you may never fully see flourish. It takes heart for a community partner to open their doors, offer their resources, and say, “We’re in this together.” And it takes heart, above all, for a single parent to wake up every day, face overwhelming odds, and choose to keep going anyway. Since 1986, Project Self-Sufficiency has been the place where all of those hearts come together.
The results of that collective commitment are real and measurable. Participants see an average income increase of $37K upon graduating from our program. But the true depth of the impact cannot be captured in a single statistic. It lives in the stability a child grows up with, the doors that open for families who once had none, and in the ripples that move quietly but powerfully through the Northern Colorado community for decades to come. That ripple exists because donors, volunteers, community partners, and neighbors all chose to show up — not just for a family, but for the generations that family will go on to shape.
This is the multigenerational heartbeat of Project Self-Sufficiency. When a single parent earns their degree and steps into a meaningful career, their children grow up knowing what perseverance looks like. The cycle of poverty breaks, and the legacy that follows belongs to every person who played a role — every dollar given, every hour volunteered; every partnership forged in the belief that one family’s breakthrough can change a community forever. February is Heart Month. And there is no greater expression of the heart than investing in a future you may never fully see, for families who will never forget that you did.
